Apathy will cause the end of Thee

Whatever is done now it will be difficult, if not impossible to prevent the average global temperature by 2 degrees by 2100. If no measures are taken it is expected that the average temperature of the globe will rise between 3 and 7 degrees centigrade. Global warming due to people’s actions is uncontroversial.

When the issue of climate change is brought up, there are 5 ways people typically respond to the idea of climate change:

1. Deny that climate change exists

2. Deny that Climate change is our problem

3. Put blame on other countries

4. Declare that the problem is too big to fix

5. State that it is too late to make a difference

It is time to quit denying the causes and the problem of Climate change. It is time to make change before it is too late.

The problem with climate change and other environmental problems is that we just don’t know what is going to happen.

  • We don’t know the various levels of temperature increases in certain areas.

  • We don’t know the exact consequences of sea-level rise.

  • We don’t know the what the weather might throw at us.

However, since many of these events have been seen as a high probability, it is unlikely that we’ll avoid them completely.

Here is a metaphor that I was once told. Imagine you and your family were in a civil war where soldiers were going through the countryside, looking for prisoners. Do you stay at your home, or leave? If you stay put they will likely find you, it is only a matter of time. If you leave, you might not get caught. You just don’t know what will happen. Would you stay and wait to be caught or would you take precautionary methods and leave before you're found?

But how does this apply to climate change? Should we wait around waiting for adversity to knock on our door or do we do something, anything to try to prevent this from happening?

You may ask yourself, what can I do? This is such a big problem, and I live in such a small community. How can any action I take have any significance or impact. You can make a difference. One cell in your body may seem insignificant, but it has a purpose. If it goes against the rules, and it spreads locally a thing called cancer begins. One cell can initiate cancer, and that one cell can make a significant difference. Now even though this is a weird and harsh example where cancer is the outcome, my main message I want you to take is that you can make a difference.

Think of the future, and learn from the past.
